I’m just gonna be honest – wedding planning is not my favorite thing. Everything big (like our venue and all our vendors) has been easy as pie, which is a big hurdle for a lot of brides I know, but the little things are starting to kill me! Remembering things like salt and pepper shakers at midnight when I’m already half asleep, trying to anticipate how many drinks our guests will go through and what they’ll like, organizing seating charts and all the crafts (which I normally love!) has been a lot of work and a lot to keep track of. I know it’ll all be *so* worth it and I can’t wait for the day to finally be here, but I’ll also be so happy to never plan another wedding! I’m not nervous about anything except forgetting something – which I’m sure no one will notice anyway. But I’m a perfectionist and it’s all making me a little nuts.
BUT! One of the best parts of wedding planning happened this weekend – my bridal shower! One of my besties Jen threw me the prettiest storybook bridal shower I could have ever imagined on Sunday. It rained all day so we cozied up under a tent, the tables strewn with runners made of book pages and moss, keys dangling from tree branches, and beautiful china setting each person’s place. It was all so wonderful and perfect, so I wanted to share some photos and details!
Jen rented farmhouse tables and benches and brought her own furniture out to her yard and she created such an intimate, comfortable little setting.
And Jen’s husband BUILT a third farm table to match the rented ones! She laid a carpet on the ground and we sat on pillows while we sipped basil-strawberry water and ate the most delicious strawberry cake.
One huge hit of the party was the soft pretzel bar – Jen and her mom used an old mitten drying rack to hold pretzels and then everyone got to add their own toppings. Such a cute idea and perfect as a snack before we ate our entrees.
The table settings were perfect. Our wedding is loosely “Secret Garden” themed and Jen took that and ran with it. She made centerpieces out of sticks she found and gathered, and collected books for months with titles that reminded her of me.
The cake was my favorite strawberry cake from A Little Something Bakery in West Hartford, CT. I don’t usually like cakes with fruit, but they puree the strawberry and add it right into the batter – so there are no chunks of fruit, just the taste. Literally the most amazing cake in the world – with cream cheese frosting!! And of course, Jen free-handed the toppers and cut them out 5 minutes before guests arrived. I made sure to take them home and now they live in a little dried hydrangea arrangement I’ve had for years 🙂
Jen’s mom made the prettiest apple tarts – rolled to look like rosebuds!
One of my favorite parts of the shower was the skeleton keys. Jen used twine to tie skeleton keys to tags, then had everyone write the “key to a successful relationship.” They hung from a gorgeous old tree branch and then I took them home to read what everyone wrote. They ranged from “never stop dating” to “compromise” to “slow dances” to “sex” and it was so fun trying to figure out who wrote what.
Another favorite touch was that everyone brought a favorite recipe, and Jen gave me a gorgeous Rifle Paper recipe box to fill up with all my new ones! I love having a recipe from everyone in their own handwriting, and I got lots of cookbooks too…so I guess it’s a double edged sword that I have a lot of meals to pick from but no excuses not to make dinner 😉 My mom is a smart ass and I took all her recipes from her years ago, so her card was my favorite.
Mom also gave me all her first blooms from her garden. She’s been waiting very impatiently for her peonies to open…so the fact that she surprised me with all of them was so sweet. My favorite time of year is when all the flowers bloom!
It was truly such a wonderful day. I know the rain disappointed Jen a little (it’s never fun when your vision doesn’t come to life perfectly!) but it made no difference to me and I can’t imagine a more custom and perfect party. The thought and care she and everyone put into it was so touching and I feel so lucky to have such kind hearts in my life!!
