Well well well, look who remembered she had a blog. I figured the end of the year was as good a time as any to recap what’s been going on lately…and then I got lost in the holidays and didn’t get around to it 🙂 So let’s call this a “Happy New Year” 2016 recap post!
Here we go, in order:
In April, I started a new job at my favorite place. One of my oldest and most talented friends opened her own bridal and beauty salon and I have the privilege of working every day with some of the most incredible women I’ve ever known. The space is beautiful, welcoming, and it doesn’t feel like work. I’m doing what I’m good at doing and I’ve never been happier at a “job.”
And because I work with such talented ladies: I’m finally blonde again! My hair wizard – I mean stylist – has worked her magic on me since I was 15. She fixed my tears when another stylist botched my bangs in sophomore year of high school. She did my hair (and Jen did my makeup!) for all my proms. And after five years of no color or bleach in my hair, she made me feel new again. I feel like myself – I’m a blonde at heart, even if my roots disagree. Kinda crazy how a seemingly small thing like your hair or makeup can really make you feel like you’re ready to tackle anything.
Our puppies turned two!! And I can’t believe we’re less than six months away from them turning three. We had another “Dachshund Day” with Gracie’s brothers and sisters and it was HEAVEN.
Millie started going to daycare two days a week (right next to the salon!) and it’s the best thing we’ve ever done for her. She has so much fun and comes home absolutely wiped out. All I have to do is say “daycare” these days and she freaks out with excitement, she LOVES it.
I got to be part of a really cool styled photoshoot with some incredibly talented women. It was the first time I got to put on a wedding dress and we had so much fun. Link to more photos (by the incredible Corey Lynn Tucker Photography) here!
Joe was Bob Ross for Halloween and I was a happy little tree. We fall asleep to Bob Ross on Netflix at night (he’s so relaxing!) so it seemed like the obvious choice this year.
And shortly after on Halloween Day, Joe and I got engaged! We’re getting married almost exactly 11 years after we went to prom together 🙂
I’ll give you the short version of the proposal story. I did know a proposal was coming this year so I never ever thought he’d be able to surprise me. EVER. Like, I would have bet my life on it – to be dramatic but honest. So on Halloween, I went with our realtor best friend down to a shoreline listing of hers to take some photos of the condo with my camera. I had done it for her before in another town and suspected nothing. We took interior photos and then walked down to the beach to take a few of the view, right before the sun started to set. As I was photographing the ocean, Joe came up from behind me with roses, knelt in the sand and asked me to marry him. I don’t even remember what he said because I was so shocked but our bestie had stepped to the side and filmed the whole thing. My nails were chipped, my hair was in a messy bun and I had no makeup on. I still can’t believe he pulled it off. I thought he’d do it on my birthday earlier in October so I had decked myself OUT that night – no jewelry, fly manicure, pretty dress. My birthday obviously came and went with no proposal (he told me afterward “that was too obvious!”) so his favorite part of the story is that I looked like a mess when he actually did it, because he knew that meant I truly didn’t expect anything that day. He really, really got me. He had a custom setting designed based on a vintage one I had saved a few years ago and he used my great-grandfather’s diamond as the center stone. It’s mine and it’s perfect 🙂 and my parents love that it’s on my finger forever!
I remember before we left the beach, I scrambled around looking for shells to bring home as mementos and had a hard time finding any good ones. For Christmas, he gave me jars of sand and shells he had collected before I got there – explaining why I couldn’t find many. Secret romantic, that guy!
So we’re planning a June wedding with food trucks and lawn games at a really pretty historic venue surrounded by blooming gardens.
I can’t wait to put on a wedding dress and eat pizza and ice cream with my prom date 🙂 Honeymoon suggestions? We’re dreaming of going back to Big Sur!
Hillary lost. Trump won. I’m still devastated and having a hard time facing that reality. Too much to go into here though.
My momma celebrated one year being cancer free and we all can’t believe it’s been a year. It almost feels like a lifetime ago, but she’s doing so well and has even lost weight and feels healthier than she did before her diagnosis. I watched The Family Stone again this past Christmas and had a nice therapeutic cry about it. Look at this pretty little lady and try not to smile.
Another reality I’m still struggling with – my grandma passed away before Christmas. She was one of my favorite people I have ever met and will ever meet. I’m internalizing a lot of my longing for her and it’ll hit me when I least expect it, I think. She lived a wonderful, full life and the world is better having had her in it. I take comfort in the happiness she found along the way and very fond memories of her, but it’s still so hard to lose someone you’ve loved your whole life. I haven’t let myself grieve it fully yet. I think I might be afraid of the pain.
Christmas was wonderful. Joe got me a Letterfolk board and I’m having so much fun planning messages! He’s already screwed with one of them so that’ll be a fun new game between us *all the eye rolls.* He also got me a Laura Hooper calligraphy kit that’s been super fun to practice with. Hopefully I have a good handle on it by the time invitations need to be lettered, but maybe not (smooth upstrokes are hard!) – any tips are very welcome!!
TV shows from this year that I can’t get enough of:
- Obviously and always Game of Thrones. I’ve already read all the spoilers for next season because I have a real sickness when it comes to not knowing things ahead of time. Makes Joe nuts. But I live for Jon Snow and had to know.
- Stranger Things. Watched it at least 5 times. Obsessed.
- Westworld. So good, so intense, so confusing. Gotta go back and watch it again from the beginning. Can’t wait for next season.
- Gilmore Girls. I feel like this deserves its own post so I won’t even go into it except for – JESS.
- This is Us. It’s my new Parenthood and I can’t get enough. Every Tuesday I sit glued to the tv and say “this is my favorite show” while Joe rolls his eyes, but he loves it too.
A few more of my favorite shots from 2016:
So, parts of 2016 were terrible. Not quite as terrible as the terrible parts of 2015, but not great nonetheless. But like my mom says, the good was great. We got engaged, we saw Obama’s White House, everyone is healthy. And 2017 looks to be brighter even still. So here’s to wedding planning, and hopefully blogging more this year! Happy New Year, friends 🙂
